Frequently Asked Questions
What is a virtual domain?
Quite simply, it is a name
that identifies an organization on the Internet. The domain
is referenced from right to left. For example, in the URL
www.xeyeweb.com, "com" is the commercial domain, "xeyeweb"
is the company called Xeye Web, while "www " is a
machine called www (our web server) which is part of the XeyeWeb
domain, and not actually part of the domain name at
all.
A Virtual Domain is
effectively your domain name run on our web server.
Back to Questions
How do I register a domain name?
First you need to decide on
which registrar you wish to file your domain. In the early
days of the Internet there was only really one choice as Network
Solutions held the monopoly on the registration of .com, .net,
and .org domain names while CAnet held a similar monopoly
of the .ca namespace here in Canada. In 1999 the domain business
was deregulated and thus, while one group may have control
over the "root registry" for a particular namespace, any organization
can register domains as long as they have been accredited
with ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).
Xeye Web has a reseller agreement
in place with Tucows
OpenSRS to register domains with the following extensions:
.ca, .com, .net, .org, .tv, and .info. We can help you register
your domain and become your registrar. Why not keep all your
Internet commerce in one place?
Back to Questions
How do I know if the domain name I want is
available?
The most reliable way to check
if the domain name you want is available is to check it via
WHOIS. The WHOIS database contains registration records for
all domains. If it's registered, it means someone beat you
to it. You can use our WHOIS tool to check for the domain
you want by clicking here.
Back to Questions
What do all these .whatever names mean?
Each .whatever (.com, for example)
relates to a specific namespace administered by a particular
registration authority. They are all intended for different
purposes and have different registration rules. The domains
Xeye Web can register for you are defined below:
| .com
|
Originally intended
for any commercial purpose, but no registration restrictions
govern this namespace any longer. |
| .net
|
Originally intended
for network computer systems, but no registration restrictions
govern this namespace any longer. |
| .org
|
Originally intended
for non-profit organizations or any group that did not
qualify under the .com, or .net rules, but no registration
restrictions govern this namespace any longer. |
| .ca |
Administered
by CIRA,
this namespace is reserved for Canadian businesses, persons,
or other entities. You must prove eligibility for a .ca
name by qualifying under the terms of CIRA's registration
agreement. Typically, these restrictions require you be
a Canadian Citizen or a Canadian Corporation/Business,
however, other lesser-used categories also exist. Please
call us for more details. |
| .info
|
This is a new
namespace recently created by ICANN intended for registration
by groups interested in creating a site to provide information
on a project, business, company, or other entity. Some
registration restrictions may apply. |
| .tv |
Originally a
"country" domain (similar to .ca) that was purchased a
few years ago and has been marketed as a domain for people
involved in television or television production. Registration
rules apply. Please call for details. |
As you can see, you have several
domain name choices.
Back to Questions
How much does it cost to register each type
of domain?
If you choose to register your
domain through a third party registrar you will need to consult
your selected registrar for their pricing tables. If you choose
to register your domain through Xeye Web, these prices are
in effect for all registrations:
| |
Price Per
Year |
Min/Max
Term |
| .com |
$25.00 |
1 year minimum
10 year maximum |
| .net |
$25.00 |
1 year minimum
10 year maximum |
| .org |
$25.00 |
1 year minimum
10 year maximum |
| .ca |
$48.00 |
1 year minimum
9 year maximum |
| .info |
$50.00 |
2 year minimum
10 year maximum |
| .tv |
$75.00 |
2 year minimum
10 year maximum |
Price Per Year indicates
the price charged for each year of registration. For example,
if you were to register a .com domain for 3 years you would
be billed $75.00 + GST (3 years x $25/yr. = $75.00). Some
domains (.info, and .tv) have minimum 2 year registration
periods.
Back to Questions
If I choose Xeye Web as my registrar what
do I need to know?
Once you have decided to choose
Xeye Web as your domain registrar through our reseller agreement
with Tucows
OpenSRS there are some legal agreements that you must
read. Once you file your application with Xeye Web it is taken
as acknowledgement that you have read and agreed to the terms
in the contracts listed below. Some contracts are specific
to certain domains. You do not need to read those that do
not apply to your registration.
Back to Questions
What is domain hosting?
Once your domain is registered
you need to host it somewhere. It is important that
your host be able to provide DNS service (a background service
that properly indexes and routes domain names across the Internet)
and has a dedicated high speed Internet connection. Cyberus
is a domain host. We will create your domain on one of our
servers so that the world will be able to see your
site and send you e-mail.
